Arts and Crafts: Artesanato - tastefully displayed ritual artifacts, musical instruments, basketry, paintings, jewelry, and wood sculptures. Livraria Vanguarda, Ltd. Rua Rei Katyavala, #67A (3 doors down from Pizzeria Bella Napoli), Tel. 342-568. Cenarius - Exposition of art, plus bar. This building is said to be 160 years old. Located on the same square as the Ministry of Defense. Open from 1800 hours every night except it's closed on Sundays. Ceramic pottery shop - Locally made pottery located in Viana, 15 Km east of Luanda. They will custom make designs. Coconote - Artesanato - Africa - Largo Fernando Coelho da Cruz, right behind the Rialto Restaurant. "Cute little expensive store." They have knick-knacks and some clothing. They are open every day, except Sunday. Tel. 396-991. Espelho da Moda ("yellow awning store")- Sells local woodcarvings, paintings, jewelry, pottery, cloth, and some pieces of wood furniture. Located on the Rua Amilcar Cabral, #107. Galeria Arte Africa - Intriguing arrangement of artifacts from all over Africa. Cloth from Zimbabwe and Tanzania, woodcarvings from Angola, bath oil from Zanzibar to name a few… Rua Rainha Jinga (close to Continental Hotel). Humbi-Humbi - Rua Rainha Ginga, #31. One of the more important art galleries of Luanda. "Kilometer 17" or "Benfica" or "Futungo Market" - a variety of African arts are displayed here, such as paintings, ivory, carvings, malachite, bronze, and hand-woven baskets. (17 Km south of Luanda) (Bargaining is necessary.) NOTE: It is required that all Angolan crafts be certified with a stamp before leaving the country when they are hand carried. The stores in town will do this for you, but if you've bought items in a market or on the street you will need to go to the building on Rua Major Kanhangulo (opposite from Casa Inglesa and near the Iron Palace or Palacio de Ferro).
Bakeries: Bolo Rei - Just around the corner from the Chevron building on a little side street, offers a nice variety, quite popular with Europeans on weekend mornings. Rua Manuel dos Santos, #20. Tel. 391-372/976, 392-294. Pastelaria Maravilha - Located at the Kinaxixe market on the corner. Within walking distance from the Embassy. Offers café type atmosphere, nice variety of pastries and snacks. Pastelaria Nilo - There are several different locations in the city, Mutamba, Maianga (ground level of the USAID building), and Ingombota. They serve confections, pastries, breads, and drinks. It is more like a European café type establishment. Pay first, then retrieve your order.
Butchers ("Talhos"): Talho 22-Kinaxixe - Meats are sold from a cold room at the back of the shop. They sell beef, pork, and minced meat. Talho Sobrão - Rua Liga Nacional Africana. Across the street from the old USAID building. Reasonable prices, popular with the locals, very busy on Saturday mornings. Fresh meat and fish. This store also sells fruits and vegetables. (For information on hours of operation, see the supermarkets and shopping section of the Welcome Packet). Talho Ta Clara - Located on Rua Cardoso Camim, running parallel to the Av. 10 Decembro and the Parliament building. Small shop with fresh and frozen meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, etc… Very busy on Saturday mornings.
Dry Cleaners: Fabrics: Bossanova - Rua Femado Brique/Sousa Cortinha Mutamba (between Mutamba Clinic and the back of the bus station). A good selection of fabrics upstairs. Sewing accessories - Organisators Kizomba Ltd., Rua Presidente Marien N'Geuabi (between #s 118 and 122).
Florists and Garden Nurseries: Afro Jardim - Rua Direita de Luanda. Plantarte, R. de 1 Congresso, 11-A. Tel. 393-789. Very expensive. Estufa Angolana - Sidonio Pais, #159. In front of the Hospital Militar. Tel. 325-494. Ask for Lidia. IA-UABA - Rua Amilcar Cabral, # 236-238. Tel. 330-428. This store sells fresh as well as dry flowers and arrangements. They also sell perfume for men and women. A Nossa Sombra - Largo do Kinaxixe, Rua da Missão. They sell all necessary garden tools and also sell many types of plants, but their prices are not cheap. They specialize in decoration pieces, natural and artificial. A nice café and bar is on the property. Tel. 341-423, 091-502-207 (cellular).
Hardware Stores: Cimex, Lda. - Rua Stuart Carvalhais #11 (past Jumbo going out to Viana, will be on the right, should be able to see a big sign from the road.) They have all types of hardware items, as well as cases of drinks, such as liqueurs and some grocery items. Portuguese company, most items imported from Portugal. Tel./Fax: 362-458/362-235
Hair Dressers, Manicures, Pedicures: Cabaleiro Unisexo - Located in the Hotel Tropico on the ground floor. Offers hair care, manicures, pedicures, and waxing. Prices a little more than other places, but the shop is clean and professional. Hours are Monday-Saturday 0900-1900. Hair Cabeleireiros - Rua Samuel Bernardes, #7A (located just around the corner from Predio Soleil apartment building, which is on the same street as the Igreja do Carmo). Tel. 399-496. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday 0800-1800. Mukifu Cabeleireiros Unisex salon - Hair cutting and dressing, manicures, pedicures, and depilatory services. Rua Commandante Kuenha, # 42 (around the corner from the Cuban Embassy). No telephone. STENDHAL - Rua Luis de Camões, #379A. Located in the Ministry of Finance building. Tel. 336-656/336-765. Hours are 0800-1900.
Hotels: Hotel Alvalade - Newest hotel in Luanda, opened in 2002. Avenida Comandante Gika. Tel. 327-470. Hotel Continental - Rua Manuel Caldeira, #2. Located just down the hill from the Fort, this hotel has a beautiful view of the bay. Includes a breakfast buffet in the Restaurant Caravela. The bar "Equador" is said to serve the best "Irish coffee" in town. It is located at the far end of the "Marginal", across the square from the port entrance. It is considered the "nicest" of Luanda's hotels. Room rates: Single - $195 Double - $225. The rate includes a breakfast buffet at the restaurant on the 6th floor. There is also an area dedicated to African art. There is a small exercise room on the 7th floor with a large patio for sunbathing. Ther is a wonderful view from the top of the hotel. If you're looking for a beautiful view of the city and bay, take the elevator to the top floor and then walk the steps up to the roof. Office Tel. 310-104/859, 311-449/717; Fax. 310-607 Hotel Panorama - Ilha do Cabo. Located on the Ilha de Luanda, it has a prominent sign that can be seen from across the bay. Not quite as well kept as it once was, they do have a restaurant with a nice view of the city at night. Tel. 337-841/5-337-898 Hotel Trópico - Located on the busy road, Rua da Missao just down from the Kinaxixe Circle. The hotel recently underwent renovations and has improved its overall appearance. New features include a unisex hair salon and a nicer restaurant. The restaurant is located on the top floor with a three-sided view of the city. There is a small group of artisans next to the hotel who sell African artifacts. Vigorous negotiations are a must. Tel. 331-141

Music: R.M.S. - Produções Musicais-Rua José Anchieta, #89. They offer a huge variety of CDs and cassettes. Their prices are a little steep. The music is located on the second floor. They sell a wide variety of CDs for reasonable prices, they also have some movies on DVD.

Veterinarian: Tropical - Consultório Veterinario. Located on Rua Ndunduma, #196, just down the road from the Embassy. Their consultation area is small. They seem to be lacking in more sophisticated equipment and the operatory is not sterile. Their prices for service are expensive as well. Right next door is a pet shop with supplies, fish, birds, and turtles and on the other side is a pharmacy with some pet toys and supplies. Tel. 341-423
