Supermarkets, Catalog and Online Shopping This section offers a listing of supermarkets and choices of catalog and online shopping vendors in alphabetical order. Afri-Belge: Two locations, Boa Vista (close to Continental Hotel) and just up the street from the Embassy. Good prices on fresh fruits and vegetables. Limited variety. You can find small kitchen appliances, utensils, and related items. Angoship: Two locations, Rua Rainha Jinga, #172 and Largo do Ambiente, #11. Well stocked with most grocery items, fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, bread, drinks, and alcohol. Most food items imported from Portugal. Membership is required with an advance of $500 for the store on Rainha Ginga. Purchases are deducted from a credit balance. The balance needs to be replenished periodically. There is also one located at Praça do Ambiente down the "Serpentine" from the Embassy that is open to everyone with payment made in Kwanzas. Hours of Operation are Monday 1500-1845, Tuesday - Friday 0900-1845, Saturday 0900-1345, closed for lunch between 1245-1500 on weekdays. Aujaf, Lda.: Rua Eugénio de Castro #59. Tel. 363-224/363-323. It's located further down on the same road as Jembas and Cinema Atlántico. This store is stocked with products from South Africa. Fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, cheeses (i.e. sour cream, cream cheese, etc.), specialty items, breads (rolls, bagels, etc.), and candies. They also will special order ethnic Indian foods (i.e., roti, ghee, masalas, etc.) Hours of Operation are Monday-Friday 0900-18:30, Saturday 0900-1400. "Elf" (Cantina Palanca): Rua Presidente Marien N'Gouabi. Located in the basement of the TotalFinaElf apartment building. Membership is required with $500 deposit. Well stocked with French and South African items. Weekly flight. Fresh meats and cheese counter. Also, provide fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen foods, alcohol, bread, and fresh flowers. Hours of Operation are Monday-Wednesday 0900-1300/1600-1900, Thursday 0900-1300, Friday 0830-1300/1500-1930, Saturday 0830-1500. Es-Ko Angola, Ltd. (Cantina Abastecimentos Ass.): Rua Gomes da Sousa, no sign for store (on the corner, pink building). Membership is required, but people are allowed to make a deposit in cash (any amount), or by check. A letter is available for Embassy employees through the Administrative Section to facilitate membership. Also required are two passport photos for ID card and a copy of passport. Items for sale include fresh meats from South Africa, frozen meats from South Africa and Brazil, white and whole wheat bread, fresh fruits and vegetables, cheeses, canned and boxed goods, toiletries, and kitchen items. Prices are marked in Euros and KWZ. Tel. 390 536; Hours of Operation are Monday-Thursday 1500-1800, Friday 0930-1200/1500-1800, Saturday 0900-1200. Hipermercado Samba: Rua da Samba, #11. It is open to everyone with payment being made in Kwanzas. Well stocked with canned and packet products, a refrigerated area and meat counter. It also has fresh fruits and vegetables, drinks and household items. Samba has its own parking lot as well. Hours of Operation are Monday-Friday 0900-1700, Saturday 0900-1400. Intermarket: Behind the Presidente Hotel, open to everyone with payment made in Kwanzas or dollars. There is a small bank on the premises if you need to exchange money. It is well stocked with quantity, but not much variety. Fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, meats, as well as canned and boxed foods are available. In addition, it has a wide variety of household items. Intermarket has its own parking lot. Hours of Operation are 0900-1800 Monday-Saturday, 0800-1200 Sunday. "Jumbo" (Loja Francas de Angola): Avenida Deslinda Rodrigues (road to Viana), off Primeiro de Maio roundabout. It is open to everyone with payment made in Kwanzas. This store is very large and has a huge selection of all household items, kitchen, food, alcohol, fresh fruits/vegetables, bakery items, and children's toys. This store also has its own parking lot. It is crowded on Saturday mornings. Hours of Operation are Monday-Friday 0900-1700, Saturday 0900-1300. Jumavip (minimercado): Close to "Auto Pechicha" just off Largo Bocage, and on the street behind Aujaf, Ltd (the "South African" store). Portuguese run, nice little neighborhood shop. Nice produce, meats, etc., and there is a little restaurant (O Golfingha) to the back that is open for "almoço" and "lanche" only. Looks new and is clean, including their restrooms. Tel. 365-086. Hours of Operation are Monday-Friday 0800-2000, Saturday 0800-1800. Netgrocer: Embassy employees should be aware of pouch restrictions about package size and prohibitions against liquids, glass, etc., when ordering grocery items from the Internet. Peter Justesen Company: Duty Free household goods (kitchen appliances, linens), consumables (wines, liquors, beers, all types of foods), clothing and accessories offered for diplomatic personnel. There are many hidden charges and prices are quite expensive. Company A/S Redmolen 2 , P.O. Air freighted on dry ice for frozen items. Flight from South Africa takes 3.5 hours. The Embassy arranges for orders for its own personnel. Airfreight costs are prohibitive. Twice per year this company also ships orders by sea freight, which takes much longer, but is less expensive. Only dry, canned, or bottled goods are allowed to be shipped sea freight. For State Department personnel, shipping costs can be deducted from leftover consumables allowance for the first year of tour. Membership is possible, but not necessary; there are two check-out lanes for purchasing in Kwanzas. There are Brazilian and native frozen cuts of meat that include steaks, hamburgers, pork, chops, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables, wines, other foodstuffs. They have some U.S. items, such as Log Cabin maple syrup and Crayola Crayons. Reasonably priced. In addition, there is a bakery with freshly baked bread, rolls, cakes, and pastries. Hours of Operation are Monday-Friday 0800-1730, Saturday 0900-1300. Talho Tá Clara: Rua Cardoso Camim, running parallel to the Av. 10 Decembro and the Parliament building. Small shop with fresh and frozen meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, etc. The store is very busy on Saturday mornings.
